In memory of Alice Munk, a Czeckoslavak girl who died in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on 7 March, 1944, and Rudi Vrba, a fellow prisoner who fell in love with Alice, but could not save her. Vrba escaped from the camp on 10 April, 1944 with fellow Slovak, Alfred Wetzler, and recalls in his book, 'I Escaped from Auschwitz', (Robson Books, UK, 2006), the horrors of the camp, details of his escape, his relationship with Alice, and how, with Wexler, he co-wrote the Vrba-Wetzler report (1944), detailing the mass-murder taking place at the camp.

At the gates of Hell
You took me from the fire
For just a moment in time
We fed a forgotten desire
We learned to sharpen our senses
Living on the razor’s edge
Oh and the last time I saw you
It came as no surprise
To see the fear and the courage
In your dark brown eyes

I wanted to be the one
You knew you could depend upon
Although I could never see a future in your eyes
Although we could clearly see the nightmare
By which we were overrun
That I could not protect you from

We didn’t talk about living
Just living one day longer
We fed the love we had
Like it was a raging hunger
To find such a love in this place
Like a spring flower holding on a wild cliff face
You don’t expect it to survive
But the spirit’s still alive
And it will never leave
You gave me an answer
To survive is to believe

I wanted to be the one
You knew you could depend upon
Although I could never see a future in your eyes
Although we could clearly see the nightmare
By which we were overrun
That I could not protect you from

Taken by, taken by the Great Conspiracy
All but one of my emotions died that day
Still you came to me in the dark times
Warmed only by a heart where memories burned
And you told me to dream of a day without cruelty
You said that day, one day,
Would surely come

I wanted to be the one
You knew you could depend upon
Although I could never see a future in your eyes
Although we could clearly see the nightmare
By which we were overrun
That I could not protect you
No, I could not protect you from
That I could not protect you from, no, no
That I could not protect you from
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
