About Con
Con Meehan, aka The Acoustic Mercenary, is an Irish-born singer-songwriter based in Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk, England - the same county that inspired two of England's most highly regarded artists - John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough – and one of its most noted composers, Benjamin Britten.
2023 saw the release of three mini-albums: Jackie Daniels & Me, Suffolk & Good! and Love In A Time Of War – the latter being inspired by people and events in World War II.
Con’s 15-track debut album, Intelligence Under Pressure (2003), attracted the attention of BBC Radio Suffolk's Stephen (Fos) Foster, who said the album was:
“A great selection of self-penned tracks. The album's best track is Radio Heart. It featured on the BBC Radio Suffolk playlist for several weeks and the more I hear it the better it is. If you hear a better pop song this year, please let me know. Other highlights include The Train Now Standing and On the Edge of Your Memories which recalls a fire in a Dublin Disco in 1981 in which 48 teenagers died.”
Of Intelligence Under Pressure, The Journal of the Musicians' Union said: "Con Meehan's self-financed debut is out on his own label, Lightning Bird Records. Con has appeared on live sessions at BBC Radio Suffolk, who have playlisted Radio Heart, the first track on the album. The moving On The Edge Of Your Memories is dedicated to 48 teenagers who died in a fire in a north Dublin disco on Valentine's night 1981. Meanwhile the sparsely produced Still I Love You also distinguishes itself. Sensitive MOR/folk pop music, enhanced by thought-provoking lyrics and moving vocals."
Con’s songs explore eternal themes such as love, loss, redemption, self-belief and self-forgiveness, and range from folk through acoustic-rock, soulful ballads through mid-tempo pop songs, to gritty, high-energy rock with elements of Trance.
Born in Wexford town, (Ireland), Con plied his trade as a solo musician along Ireland’s east coast, and played in many of Dublin’s best-known music venues - such as The Suffolk Inn, Lincoln's Inn, The Meeting Place and The Baggott Inn - and shared the bill with some of Ireland's best guitarists and songwriters, including Barry Moore (now Luka Bloom), Jimmy MacCarthy, Mick Hanley, Declan Sinnott and Kieran Halpin.
Con gets a lot of his inspiration on the road, and has travelled in India, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania (climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1999), Zanzibar, the USA, Turkey, Europe, and throughout the UK and Ireland.
